The NASA Lewis integrated propulsion and flight control simulator

A new flight simulation facility was developed at NASA-Lewis. The purpose of this flight simulator is to allow integrated propulsion control and flight control algorithm development and evaluation in real time. As a preliminary check of the simulator facility capabilities and correct integration of its components, the control design and physics models for a short take-off and vertical landing fighter aircraft model were shown, with their associated system integration and architecture, pilot vehicle interfaces, and display symbology. The initial testing and evaluation results show that this fixed based flight simulator can provide real time feedback and display of both airframe and propulsion variables for validation of integrated flight and propulsion control systems. Additionally, through the use of this flight simulator, various control design methodologies and cockpit mechanizations can be tested and evaluated in a real time environment

What is new about people taking drugs: Nothing! Our society is a drug-oriented society. We have been both using drugs and, at times, abusing them for years. Furthermore, drug abuse has been written about for hundreds of years. What is alarming today, however, is the number of youth who are joining the drug scene from our junior high, high schools and colleges throughout the country. Fortunately, many of these will be involved only temporarily. Others will develop physical and psychological problems as a consequence of their involvement. Our responsibility is not limited to the small percentage that have short or long-term consequences, but to all youth in our community and country. Hopefully we can answer some of the pressing questions facing parents, teachers and professionals

Correlations between the satellite radiance values water color, Secchi disk visibility, turbidity, and attenuation coefficients were generally good. The residual was due to several factors including systematic errors in the remotely sensed data, errors, small time and space variations in the water quality measurements, and errors caused by experimental design. Satellite radiance values were closely correlated with the optical properties of the water

And how systemic racism has impacted these neighborhoods over time. This paper will explore this through the history, existing conditions, findings, and policy and program recommendations. And will aid in combating systemic racism and starting the conversation about what is currently happening in some of Richmond’s Northside Neighborhoods

Being homeless: The influence of personality and coping styles on health outcomes.

In 2007/2008 there were 56,561 applications to Scottish local authorities by individuals or households seeking assistance under the homeless persons legislation. This thesis examines the legislative background to homelessness and considers issues of definition. The link between homelessness and health outcomes is reviewed and homelessness is identified as a stressor. People react differently to being homeless and the influence of personality, and coping styles on health outcomes, measured by a modified version of the General Health Questionnaire (Goldberg and Hillier, 1979), was examined. Ninety-six people who had applied to a local authority for assistance due to homelessness completed a questionnaire and participated in an interview at a single session. The Ten Item Personality Index (Gosling, et. al, 2003) and the Internal-External scale (Rotter, 1966) were used to measure personality and the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (Folkman and Lazarus, 1988) was used to measure coping styles. The data was analysed using descriptive, correlational and regression analysis for the quantitative data and a reporting framework, which was developed to report on the qualitative data. It was found that emotional stability, planful problem solving, seeking social support and accepting responsibility were significant predictors of both mental and physical symptoms. Conscientiousness, and accepts responsibility were significant predictors of (social) dysfunction. Locus of control was found to have no significant influence on health outcomes. An interesting finding was that seeking social support as a coping style had the result of worsening health outcomes. Further analysis revealed that the outcome of seeking support is important and that to fail to achieve this can have a detrimental effect on health outcomes. The interview data gives an account of what being homeless means from a participant’s perspective and provides useful context to the quantitative data. The interview results were consistent with, and supported the questionnaire results. The implication of these results for an intervention strategy for homeless people assisted by a local authority is discussed, and a possible intervention is suggested which would enhance coping skills and improve access to health care for this group
